About

Melissa @ Guadeloupe Center Annual Thanksgiving Soup KitchenArt has always been a huge part of my life. My father’s family was involved in art sales of many world renowned paintings and sculptures and my mother has been an appreciator of the art world since a child. So it was only inevitable that I would follow in their footsteps towards a passion for the arts. Since I could remember, I always was in the midst of drawing or painting something or sculpting an object out of clay. In high school, I was very much involved in the arts program. I also did several extracurricular events, such as juried shows, art festivals, art exhibitions at the Bonita Art League, as well as an art demonstration involving the use of a steamroller to make giant collagraph prints. Photography was always mixed in somewhere with everything else but never as serious till later.

My first venture into photography came with my acquisition of an old Polaroid One-Step, then various disposable cameras. I decided to take a more serious approach to it when I had received my first digital compact camera. I sought out to learn more about aperture, exposure and light sensitivity (ISO), the best lighting situations for photos, and different filters that can be used. I also learned the ropes of using photo-editing software such as Adobe Photoshop CS to the present CS4. There came a point where I felt I needed more flexibility in my equipment and upgraded to a digital SLR as well as obtaining a 35mm SLR. With the upgrade to SLRs, I learned about darkroom work which in turn helped with my abilities using my digital camera.

Since 2006, I’ve photographed several medium to large weddings. I’ve also done work with local musicians and bands, as well as some touring big named bands. I’ve worked with children of a variety of ages, newborn to teenagers.

While my main focus is portraiture and wedding photography, I’ve become involved in many other organizations. Since 2007, I’ve been the main photographer for Gulfshore Ballet, a local non-profit dance school. As of 2008, I’ve been a photographer for the Heart Gallery of America, a travelling photographic and audio exhibit created to help children in foster care find permanent families. I’ve contributed to JPG Magazine, Nowpublic.com, the Sony Alpha Gallery, and Florida Gulf Coast University’s Eagle news.

When not doing portraiture or charity work, I have a love for just documenting anything and everything. I love capturing the world around me in hopes of capturing something in a new light. From macro photography to landscapes, to heading out to the industrial areas and photographing the dirt and grime of the city, I’m enamored by it all. It has become a big part of who I am. Every day is a new experience and a new technique learned. I’m constantly keeping up with the ever changing technology of cameras and software. I make sure I know how to use my tools to their full potential.
